As mentioned in the California Languages Main Page , the existence of a Chumashan language phylum is in dispute.  Most believe Chumashan to be part of the Hokan phylum.  Further, there is disagreement as to how many Chumashan languages existed.  While seven are listed in this analysis, some linguists believe there were no more than four.

The Chumash were, for the most part, a maritime culture.  The exception were a small number of inland ethnies who were hunter/gatherers.
The Chumashans were no doubt very early arrivers in their aboriginal territories.
